Association Cup - Round 2
09/10/21 - Shelley FC vs Wombwell Town
Wombwell Town progressed to the last 16 of the Association Cup after a stunning victory over West Yorkshire Amateur League outfit Shelley FC. Following a shaky start which saw Shelley fail to capitalise on an early defensive mistake The Wellers found their feet and started to press forward. After a couple of half chances and offside decisions against him, Brad Kerr gave his side the lead on 16 minutes after he slotted home from just inside the area after a long ball forward found the striker in space. Eddie Agnew thought he had scored just two minutes later when he put the ball into the net following a Jay Hall cross from the right, but for an offside decision to go against Kerr who just about deflected the ball to his strike partner. Luke Exley nearly made it two nil with a striker wide before Shelley started to put some pressure on the Wellers goal giving Jono Davis some saves to make as he tipped over the crossbar twice and pushed another shot wide before half time. The second half saw the home side put sustained pressure on their opponents but a strong defensive display denied them at every opportunity. With time running out the Wellers players hit Shelley on the counter attack and after Joe Wilson won a corner, taken by Will Harling, it fell to Exley on the edge of the penalty area who hit a left footed shot past the keeper on 87 minutes. Four minutes into added time Agnew was released into the box on another counter attack and tucked the ball under the advancing keeper to put the game to bed.
