Association Cup - Round 3
16/11/21 - Wombwell Town vs Holmbridge FC
Wombwell Town progressed to the Quarter Finals of the Association Cup with a stunning win over Huddersfield & District outfit Holmbridge.
The visitors came to play good football and after soaked up the pressure for the opening 15 minutes which saw Lee Bennett, in the side for the first time this season, and captain Luke Exley have efforts stopped.
Holmbridge then found their feet and after forcing keeper Jono Davis into making a save, the visitors found the net on 26 minutes.
The lead was short lived as Bennett collected the ball on 31 minutes and produced a truly solo goal to equalise. With the ball at his feet inside the area the attacking midfielder twisted and turned five players before reaching the keeper two yards from goal. A powerful strike from close range left Greg Moorhouse will no chance.
The Wellers took the lead just three minutes later as Brad Kerr raced onto a through ball into the area and played a ball across the penalty box from the goal line to find Matthew Thornton unmarked in the area to put the ball across goal in front of Moorhouse and into the far corner of the net.
Bennett extended the home side's lead on 62 minutes when Kerr won a free kick after a slight push in the back 25 yards from goal. Bennett struct the free kick with power and despite Moorhouse trying to get fingertips to the ball it flew it over his head.
Holmbridge weren't about to give up though and pulled a goal back three minutes later as they put pressure on the Wellers defence. An initial shot from the left side of the box was saved down low to Davis' right hand side, but the ball was put towards goal again and despite Joe Egan's best efforts to keep it off the line Holmbridge made it 3-2.
On 77 minutes Thornton raced into the box on the break and right back Billy Fisher's shout for offside went unheard so the defender took Thornton's legs instead. Thornton made no mistake from the spot kick as he put the ball beyond the dive of Moorhouse.
It made the remaining minutes more relaxing for Wombwell Town who saw Davis smother anything Holmbridge could kick at him.
