  WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
County Senior League Div One - Game 1
04/09/21 - Kiveton Park vs Wombwell Town

The start of the season saw Wombwell Town travel to Kiveton Park for the first time in what proved to be a predictable tough encounter.

Kiveton had done well in the two previous shortened seasons and Karl Rose knew his new-look side would take some time to gel.

Four players in the starting XI, plus the two substitutes used, made their competitive debut for The Wellers in game that could easily have gone either way.

It was The Wellers' debutante Calum Smith who nearly opened the scoring after just three minutes. A free-kick by Captain Luke Exley was headed towards goal, only to be cleared off the line for a corner.

After a quarter of an hour a cross from Brad Cresswell on the left gave another debut man, Matty Thornton, his first chance, but his header went wide of the goal.

The hosts also had two chances in the even first half as Jono Davis saw one effort strike the crossbar and go over, while another, on 34 minutes, forced the keeper to make a save with his legs from a free-kick taken by Adam Bratley.

It was Kiveton who opened the scoring as a curling effort by Lewis Shaw from the edge of the area beat Davis as the home side stretched the Wellers' defence on 52 minutes.

Five minutes later though and the Wellers were level. Thornton opened his account for the team as he struck home on the rebound with a chip over Joe Dunn after his initial shot was parried back to him by the keeper.

Kiveton Park then seemed to lose their composure and following two bookings were lucky not to get a third as Thornton was taken down just inside the area on 73 minutes, resulting in a penalty.

Thornton brushed himself down and put the ball into the opposite corner as the keeper dived the wrong way and Wombwell Town were in the lead for the first time this season.

Kiveton gritted their teeth and almost caught Davis off his line on 81 minutes, but luckily he got back and pushed the ball over the crossbar just in time.

From the resulting corner however the ball went agonisingly past Davis again as the ball was kept alive without any Weller clearing the ball and Bratley took advantage to score from close range.
