County Senior League Div One - Game 10
08/01/22 - Kinsley Boys vs Wombwell Town
Wombwell Town kicked off 2022 in style with a big win over bottom club Kinsley Boys as they put pressure on South Kirkby Colliery and Handsworth Res in the league table. It took just four minutes for top scorer Brad Kerr to open the scoring for The Wellers as the striker latched onto a long ball forward and slotted past keeper Andy Sephton. The lead was doubled just three minutes later with Kerr involved once again. The striker cross from the right was headed towards goal by Jordan Cooper, only to be denied by Sephton. Eddie Agnew, who appeared to be everywhere in the first half, won the ball back in the box and laid off a pass to Brodie Cooper who smashed the ball home. Kerr notched his second of the afternoon, and eighth of the season, from the penalty spot on 16 minutes as the striker was tumbled in the area. Sephton kept Kinsley in the game with some big saves, but was beaten again on 28 minutes as Eddie Agnew smashed home a shot from inside the area, before taking a whack on the foot that he was able to shake off. Manager Karl Rose made four substitutions at half time and it seemed to be business as usual as another penalty was awarded to the Wellers on 49 minutes. Will Harling tricked his way into the area before being fouled and the midfielder stepped up to make the game 5-0 and out of Kinsley's reach. Kinsley deserved something from the game overall and were able to score a consolation on 51 minutes as sub Chris Byrnes gave a penalty away. The taker foxed the diving Matty Simpson with a Panenka penalty. Simpson denied Kinsley scoring in open play later in the game with a good save down to his left from a shot across goal, as Wombwell Town struggled to find their rhythm in the second half. Harling put the ball in the net once more in the final 25 minutes with a shot from the edge of the area, but the goal was ruled out with Agnew blocking the keepers view while in an offside position. With the game in added time sub Dec Cocking denied Kinsley Boys the chance to score once more and was sent off for being the last man, while luckily escaping giving away another penalty. Points secured the Wellers waited for others results and a near perfect day was complete with league leaders South Kirkby Colliery losing at AFC Dronfield and Denaby (4th) and Handsworth Res (2nd) battled out a 1-1 draw.
