County Senior League Div One - Game 12
22/01/22 - Wombwell Town vs Wombwell Main Res
This local derby had everything you would expect, great tackling, lots of passion, red hot debate, and plenty of goals and drama for dessert! As with some games between two teams who are based a mile away from each other, it took a while for this one to find top gear, however after half chances for each side warmed up the crowd growing in numbers throughout the afternoon the opening goal came courtesy of top scorer Brad Kerr. Town took the lead on 21 minutes when Kerr controlled the ball into the penalty area and struck across goal to find the net at the far corner for his tenth goal of the season. Relief was the over-riding emotion on 32 minutes for Wellers goalkeeper Jono Davis after he came out of his area and sliced his clearance sideways into the path of the Main Res player, but the number one was able to get back to his line and stop the shot. A minute before half time a disastrous decision by referee Craig Holland gave Main Reserves their equaliser. Holland can claim an assist for the goal as a pass by Brodie Cooper hit the referee and fell to visitor Bailey Cowsell who put the ball over Davis into the net. Despite the appeals from Town players and management that the game should have been stopped when the ball struck him, the referee allowed the goal. In added time referee Holland had to quickly gain control of the game after Joe Campbell squared up to Jay Hall with Brad Kerr intervening. Both Campbell and Kerr were booked. Thankfully the half time whistle came and allowed both sets of players to calm down. It was Town who came out the better in the second half and played the better football. On 55 minutes Eddie Agnew returned to the pitch for Hall after the two had swap places in the first half. With the Wellers pressing the Main Reserves back line a long throw by Agnew on 65 minutes was flicked on by Jordan Cooper to the head of brother Brodie. The looping header went over Kai Oloughlin and dropped into the net. Wombwell Town continued to pressurise the visitors defence, but it was they who equalised again on 77 minutes as Alfie Stokes was on hand to hit a parried save by Davis into the net from close range. With time running out passion built as Town kept pressing for another goal and they were rewarded on 90 minutes after quick thinking from Kerr saw the striker take a corner and found Agnew in the box. The forward's header seemed to move in slow motion through the air towards the far post, and with Oloughlin and the defence watching the ball hit the side netting and rapturous celebrations began. Captain Luke Exley had the final say on things four minutes into added time when he swept home a shot by the penalty spot after the perfect ball from Matty Thornton on the left. With South Kirkby Colliery losing their third game in a row, The Wellers move to just two points behind them in third with three games in hand. Handsworth, who won 10-0 at New Bohemians stay second; a point behind the leaders with one game in hand. Full Time: Wombwell Town 4 Wombwell Main Res 2 Wombwell Town Line-up:
