County Senior League Div One - Game 14
05/02/22 - Wombwell Town vs Caribbean Sports
Before the game both teams and the crowd shared a minute's silence impeccably for Jamie Lee Desmond who died suddenly on 30th January aged 31.
Wombwell Town did everything they could to score in the opening third of the game with Jamie's cousin, Brad Kerr, hitting a couple of chances wide with his team mates also failing to find the target.
It could have been costly had the team not found that extra determination after James Copley inadvertently headed into his own net following a free-kick on 31 minutes, but two goals in three minutes gave the Wellers the half time lead.
Jordan Cooper beat Caribbean Sports' keeper Kyle Aldam to the ball on 37 minutes and with the keeper out of position the striker was able to line up his shot from the corner of the penalty area and loop a shot over the defence and into the far corner to equalise.
Two minutes later and Kerr got the moment he was looking for. A charge up field by Gareth McDermott saw the number three cross from the left and a slight deflection found Kerr who scored with a rare headed goal.
The celebration meant a lot as Brad went into the stand to hug Jamie's family and friends, while sporting a dedicated t-shirt for the occasion.
The second 45 minutes belonged to Wombwell Town after a series of corners that put the Caribbean Sports' defence under strain a 51st minutes header by Joe Egan was too much pressure at the lead was extended with the centre back's first goal of the season. Although, Egan had also scored in the game against Caribbean Sports at the start of the season, which was abandoned due to injury.
Just before the hour Kerr scored his second of the match as a ball from captain Luke Exley found the striker wide in the area and his shot across the ground found the back of the net.
On 65 minutes there was a lengthy delay following a nasty looking cut to the forehead of Caribbean defender Cameron Ronksley and the added time for the injury gave the home supporters two more goals to enjoy.
The first, on 91 minutes, also gave Kerr his hat-trick. The striker latched onto the ball at the edge of the area and there was nothing Aldam could do to deny the striker.
A foul on Brodie Cooper deep into added time gave Matt Thornton the opportunity to score from the penalty spot, and he did just that to make the game 6-1.
Referee Ian Parker blew for full time before the game could kick off again.
