County Senior League Div One - Game 15
12/02/22 - South Kirkby Colliery vs Wombwell Town
There are some matches where you know you're just not going to score no matter what you try.
Wombwell Town had one of those days as they were denied multiple times by South Kirkby keeper Joshua Heppinstall.
The series of first half miss-kicks and slips in the icey wet conditions didn't suit the Wellers and a counter attack on minutes was enough to separate the two teams.
A clearance up field following one of those slips on the ball allowed Kirkby in and the shot, while not particularly powerful went past Jono Davis as he too slipped trying to make the clearance with his feet instead of collecting the ball.
Heppinstall made two saves in the first half, but after committing the foul that lead to a penalty, made his biggest yet.
Matthew Thornton stepped up and put the ball towards to the corner of the left hand post, only for Heppinstall to get across and down in time to put it wide for a corner.
On 56 minutes South Kirkby's number ten was shown a yellow card for denying the restart to the game and was given his marching orders five minutes later for a late tackle on Brodie Cooper.
The extra man helped Wombwell Town push forward in numbers, but were unable to find a way past the determined home side's defence.
Heppinstall denied Thornton again on 64 minutes after the striker followed up on his own free-kick that hit the wall.
There were efforts by Luke Exley, Brodie Cooper, Jordan Cooper, Eddie Agnew and substitute Jay Hall that were all stopped and arguably the best chance saw debutante Najib Arrian denied on the line after the keeper was stranded.
On another day (or another keeper) it could have been all so different.
