County Senior League Div One - Game 18
19/03/22 - Wombwell Main Res vs Wombwell Town
It is safe to say that Wombwell Town won the bragging rights over their rivals, albeit their reserve team, after hitting eight past their opponents away from home.
To be fair to Main Reserves they had lost a couple of players to the first team and struggled with injuries as the game progressed.
The scoring starting after eight minutes as the inform Eddie Agnew headed in at the near post following a Gareth McDermott corner.
Just three minutes later Agnew doubled the lead as he hit a first time shot towards goal following a cross from Jordan Cooper. The shot hit the post, but went in anyway for Agnew's tenth goal of the season.
On 15 minutes captain Luke Exley scored arguably the best goal of the afternoon as he volleyed a fierce shot across goal from outside the penalty area to score his fifth goal of the season.
Wombwell Main Reserves didn't give up hope and on 21 minutes pulled a goal back after showing some determination down the left wing. The across goal eventually got past Jono Davis who made sure his defence didn't become complacent after that.
On 25 minutes Agnew turned provider and a cross from the edge of the box on the left found the head of unmarked Will Harling who put the ball in at the near post for his fifth goal of the season.
There wasn't another goal until the second half, but it only took three minutes after the re-start for Agnew to complete his hat trick. A corner, by Harling, saw an initial header parried by Elliott, but Agnew was there to volley over the keeper's shoulder from close range.
Jordan Cooper had worked tirelessly all afternoon and finally got his reward on 72 minutes as he made it 6-1 with a shot from the left of the penalty area. A ball through from Agnew found the striker who neatly put the ball past the keeper.
With ten minutes to go there was time for two more goals with Jordan Cooper notching his tenth of the season for the Wellers on 81 minutes with another striker from inside the area.
Substitute Luke Norbury, playing his first game since the middle of November, struck following a Harling corner as he found himself unmarked around the penalty spot.
