County Senior League Div One - Game 20
02/04/22 - AFC Dronfield vs Wombwell Town
After an even opening 45 minutes where neither side really got going or produced anything on target, the second 45 was incomparable! The only worthy mentions from the drab first half saw Naj Arrian strike just after cutting inside from the left and Brodie Cooper shooting high and wide twice from distance. There were signs of life in the second half and the Wellers were unlucky not to be ahead on 53 minutes when Jordan Cooper beat the keeper to the ball and put it in the net, only to be given offside when the ball was floated over the top to Luke Exley who played it back from the goal line. On 55 minutes Gareth McDermott was booked for a late challenge on the left, despite not making contact the recklessness saw the man get the yellow. On the hour Brad Kerr made it into the box and forced Mark Hooper to make his first save of the afternoon and J. Cooper was just too late to get on the rebound. Two minutes later though the deadlock was broken. An almost speculative effort from 25 yards by Will Harling cannoned down, off the crossbar and over the line. With their confidence up the lead was doubled on 70 minutes with Harling latching onto a bad pass to Hooper and making no mistake from 7 yards. Harling has become a goal threat lately - this his fifth goal in four matches. The game saw a twist just a minute later as AFC Dronfield were awarded a free kick. The kick was taken quickly and hit McDermott who hadn't backed away and the left back given a second yellow. Sam Leigh, playing for the first time in a Wellers shirt since last May, made his first save of the game on 76 minutes which produced a corner. From the corner the ball bounced awkwardly on the old 3G surface and was put away to add pressure on the Wombwell Town players. In added time hearts were in mouths as Ben Partner threw himself to the ground after slight contact with Jay Hall in the area, but referee Andy Price made the correct decision and waved the decision away. Full time blew shortly after and Hooper raced upfield to confront the referee who duly booked him as passion got out of hand from the home side. Full Time: AFC Dronfield 1 Wombwell Town 2 (W. Harling 62, 70) Man of the Match: Will Harling |
