County Senior League Div One - Game 21
20/04/22 - Caribbean Sports vs Wombwell Town
It was another important three points for The Wellers as they continued their push to promotion on a tricky pitch at Caribbean Sports. Long grass and a bobbly surface didn't suit the visitors style of play, but they made procession count early and after Jordan Cooper put the opening chance of the game wide his strike partner Eddie Agnew gave them the lead after just eight minutes. A long ball forward down the left saw the striker beat Stanley Asamoah-Boamah to the ball who claimed it had gone out, but Agnew carried the ball into the area and fired over Kyle Aldam. Aldam was called into action again on 16 minutes as Jake Padgett floated a ball from deep on the right into the penalty area which Caribbean centre back Pav Khaira flicked back with his head and forced his keeper to tip over the crossbar at full stretch. More pressure came just before the half hour as Jordan Cooper headed over from a Will Harling free kick on the left. On the stroke of half time Agnew had another effort which was tipped wide by Aldam, but sadly the corner came to nothing as referee Craig Pepper blew for half time shortly after. Wombwell Town have made a habit of coming out fired up in the second half and the same could be said at Caribbean as Agnew found himself in a heap in the penalty area just a minute in after a collision by Aldam. Everyone was expecting a penalty to Wombwell Town, only for the referee to award a drop-ball to the keeper instead. The Wellers eventually made their pressure count and on 57 minutes Jordan Cooper won the ball down the right and passed inside to captain Luke Exley on the edge of the box. The skipper's pass to Will Harling allowed the midfielder to pick his shot, which was deflected over the keeper for his sixth goal in five matches. It was almost three as the Cooper brothers combined in the area as Jordan set up Brodie for a shot which was eventually blocked and cleared on 63 minutes. With the sun starting to go down behind the hill at lonely Jono Davis' area Agnew bagged his second of the game on 79 minutes with a fine strike following a forward pass by Brodie Cooper. Agnew was then replaced by Najib Arrian and just a minute later the latest substitute forced a save from Aldam, with the defender clearing off the line from the resulting corner. A highlight of the game was the introduction of Mark 'Willy' Wilson on 82 minutes as the 50 year-old made his first appearance of the season following injury and the midfielder almost netted his first goal for The Wellers three minutes later, only to see his shot go just wide of the goal. With three minutes remaining a fourth was eventually added as Brodie Cooper played a sublime ball through for substitute Brad Kerr who lifted the ball into the air from outside the box and over Aldam who could only watch the ball drop into the net.
