  WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
County Senior League Div One - Game 23
30/04/22 - Wombwell Town vs Denaby Main

Wombwell Town clinched promotion against Denaby Main, but had to do it the hard way.

In a game where the visitors had to win to give themselves any chance of promotion against the only team they could overtake it was no surprise they put up a good fight.

Denaby Main started on the front foot and if weren't for a wayward shot they could have taken the lead as early at the second minute.

The Wellers grew into the game with Eddie Agnew forcing AJ Nota into an easy save from a long distance drive on 13 minutes.

Denaby pounced on a poor pass by Will Harling on 20 minutes and played a long ball over the top, but with Joe Egan chasing the striker the Denaby man was able to slot the ball under Jono Davis to give the visitors the lead.

It was almost a quick equaliser two minutes later as captain Luke Exley first struck the wall with a free-kick and put the follow-up against the crossbar from outside the box.

An equaliser came on 27 minutes though as Chris Byrnes chipped a ball onto the edge of the area for Brad Kerr to fire over Nota and into the goal.

Half time: Wombwell Town 1, Denaby Main 1.

The second half saw The Wellers apply more pressure and Jordan Cooper popped up with a headed chance on 54 minutes as he put it wide from a corner.

Denaby Main forced Davis into his only save of the second half on 64 minutes which was comfortable for the keeper.

Will Harling made up for his first half error on 69 minutes as he netted his tenth of the season with a shot to Nota's right from inside the box after Eddie Agnew supplied the cross from the right.

A deep free-kick by Davis on 77 minutes saw Jordan Cooper head backwards to brother Brodie who shot wide of the goal.

Kerr's attempted shot on 83 minutes dropped onto the roof of the net and this lead to Denaby keeper Nota jumping up to hang on the crossbar, only to fall uncomfortably into the post and needing substituting.

The change of keeper inspired Kerr to get his second of the game just a minute later and he coolly put one past the stand-in keeper from the right of the penalty box to make it 3-1.

Denaby couldn't find the energy or inspiration to get themselves back in the game, that could have been a worse result with Kerr running through on goal for what surely would have been his hat-trick, but for referee Gary Hubbard to blow the full time whistle.

Celebrations were kept to a minimum out of respect of Denaby Main, who have had a fine season and looked set to join us in promotion until their recent dip in form. We wish them well.
