County Senior League Div One - Game 24
07/05/22 - South Elmsall United Services vs Wombwell Town
With promotion secure the next objective for Wombwell Town was to pick up seven points from their final three games to claim the title. The first three were picked up in style at South Elmsall United Services. Former Frickley Athletic manager Karl Rose, back at his former employers ground with his Wombwell Town club wanted a quick start from his players and he got just that. On five minutes Brad Kerr latched onto a ball in the area and from the most acute of angles managed to put the ball across goal only for the base of the post to deny the marksman. Two minutes later though and midfield schemer Will Harling saw himself in space outside the box to fire a low shot across goal into the bottom right corner for his 11th goal of the season. It took a while, but the flood gates eventually opened up with a quick fire double around the half hour mark. Jordan Cooper twisted and turned his way through a number of South Elmsall players before finally unleashing a shot from just inside the edge of the area and found the bottom corner on 29 minutes, just like Harling had. Two minutes later and a marauding run from Jake Padgett saw the right back get a nose bleed in the opposition area before he calmed squared the ball to Brodie Cooper who only had to put the ball into the net from 10 yards. On 40 minutes a run by Harling into the area saw the midfielder tripped and taking a tumble despite trying to stay on his feet, but referee Daniel Laugharne awarded the penalty. Brad Kerr made no mistake and celebrated with a hop into the crowd to hug groundsman Barrie Rose who was present after suffering a stroke recently. Half Time: SEUS 0, Wellers 4. It looked as though the visitors were going to continue their goal scoring ways five minutes into the second half when striker turned left back Gareth McDermott fired a 40 yard screamer over the keeper (we still think it was a cross) to add to South Elmsall's woes. The home side did force Jono Davis into a double save two minutes later, but this game belonged to Wombwell Town. Kerr tapped in a sixth, and his 19th of the season, on 74 minutes as captain Luke Exley put pressure on the home goalkeeper, who lost possession on the ground and allowed a simple pass to find his teammate unmarked five yards out.
