County Senior League Div One - Game 26
14/05/22 - Sheffield Medics vs Wombwell Town
Wombwell Town came into the game knowing a draw would be enough to see them lift the CSL Division One Title, but finished off their incredible season in style by putting seven past Sheffield Medics. Despite this it was a slow start in the baking May heat. Not something you can usually say, but early chances for Chris Byrnes and Brad Kerr set the tone for the one-way traffic. Another effort by Kerr on 22 minutes was blocked by the Medics keeper seconds before a drink break was called. Three minutes after the much needed downtime saw The Wellers clench their fists and increase their determination. A corner on 28 minutes by Gareth McDermott was headed in by defender Joe Egan for only his second goal of the season. It took until the 39th minutes for the lead to be doubled as Kerr denied goalkeeper Jono Davis the chance to take a penalty. The all-time top scorer was desperate to add to his tally and put the ball past the keeper who had dived the right way. Medics' keeper Matthew Claxton then went off injured before the break after Jordan Cooper slipped and collided with the number one. This saw Cooper receive a yellow card. Half Time: SM 0, Wellers 2 The stand-in keeper did well to deny the Wellers until the 58th minute when gears were cranked and a glut of goals began. J. Cooper found himself in the box and his perfect ball across goal found Kerr in plenty of space to run up and tap home for his 23rd goal in his 23rd game of the season. Just three minutes later the experienced Luke Exley fired a shot that cannoned down off the crossbar and just bounced over the line before Will Harling could take the goal away from his captain. A Harling corner on 63 minutes found Brodie Cooper at the near post whose header across goal beat the now downtrodden Medics side to make it five without reply. The subs then started with America-bound players Matty Simpson and Josh Whittaker replacing keeper Davis and Jake Padgett with Sam Ackroyd and veteran Mark Wilson replacing McDermott and B. Cooper. Brad Kerr was later replaced by Eddie Agnew. With the replacements settled into the game the goals started coming again on 76 minutes with midfield maestro Chris Byrnes scoring with a shot from 35 yards, that the now recovered Claxton, could do nothing about. Just a minute later the scoring was complete as Agnew set up J. Cooper who headed in at the near post. There was a chance for Medics to have the final say on proceedings when they were awarded a penalty with nine minutes remaining, however the spot kick rattled the crossbar and was cleared to conserve the cleansheet. The full time whistle was welcomed by both sides for very different reasons and after handshakes were exchanged the title winning celebrations began with some fiz showered on the players, a physio running around the pitch with a giant flag, and the Division One Trophy shared amongst the players for photos as players, coaches, officials and supporters all joined in together for dancing and hugs!
