County Senior League Div One - Game 4
02/10/21 - Wombwell Town vs Handsworth FC Reserves
A single goal was enough to split the sides in an enthralling match against two of the favourites for promotion.
A heavy downpour throughout the first half saw few chances until added time when Handsworth forced Gareth McDermott to clear off the line and the follow up brought Jono Davis into action who pushed the ball wide for the rebound to hit the side-netting.
A tactical switch at half time saw Luke Norbury replace Connor Peace and the added strength up front was the key to breaking the deadlock.
Norbury's blocked shot on 53 minutes fell back to the striker who tried his luck again from outside the area.
The ball looked to be going towards the far post when a Handsworth leg was outstretched and deflected the ball into the top corner to the keepers left instead, much to the visitors dismay.
It was almost 2-0 just four minutes later when Will Harling tried his luck from 30 yards and rattled the raindrops from the crossbar.
Handsworth tried to push forward at every opportunity and forced Davis into some big saves including a palm over the crossbar from a speculative shot from the left wing which left the keeper unsighted until the last moment with players blocking his view.
On 79 minutes Handsworth Reserves' top scorer Tiago Bravo was booked for simulation and to add to their woes was shown a second yellow in additional time for comments made to referee Mr. Causer.
Wombwell Town held out until the final whistle and the win moves them above Handsworth Reserves into second place in the league with a game in hand over leaders South Kirkby Colliery who are just two points ahead.
