County Senior League Div One - Game 5
16/10/21 - Wombwell Town vs South Elmsall United Services
Wombwell Town took the points in a lucky escape against a determined and unlucky South Elmsall United Services side. The visitors shocked a sluggish Wellers defence by taking an early lead after two minutes, despite calls for an offside decision as Lucas Stubbs tapped home as Callum Birch squared the ball past the advancing Jono Davis in the area. Will Harling found himself in the right place at the right time to equalise on 20 minutes as the ball fell to the midfielders feet just a few yards from goal with the keeper out of position after failing to claim the ball in a challenge with Brad Kerr. Harling still had to beat the man on the line, but made sure he scored his fifth for the club, and his first on home soil. The remainder of the first half was more even with efforts from Kerr and Eddie Agnew going wide and denied on 25 minutes and 33 minutes respectively. On 53 minutes though Kerr took full advantage of the space and time he had to take the ball under control with no one around him as he broke away from the South Elmsall back line. A quick check to see where the keeper was was enough to allow Kerr to strike into the bottom corner to give the Wellers the lead. It was short-lived however as two minutes later a penalty was awarded following a long throw into the area. James Copley tried to clear on the volley, but instead connected with the opposition. Stubbs stepped up and deceived Davis with a Panenka penalty. Kerr restored the advantage to Wombwell Town on 61 minutes with a bit of help from the goalkeeper as his cross-shot was caught in the air, only to be dropped over his head and into the net. Harling was involved for the fourth Wellers' goal as he powered his way past several defenders on the right wing and supplied a ball across goal, akin to South Elmsall's opener, to Gareth McDermott who opened up his body and made no mistake from eight yards out. South Elmsall United Services pulled one back on the counter attack with five minutes remaining following a Harling corner at the other end of the pitch. A scramble in the box saw the keeper redeem himself and launch the ball up field for Jay Hewitt to latch onto before Davis arrive and clear. Thankfully though for the Wellers this was the last goal of the game in an effort that will be seen a three points gained, despite the performance.
