  WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
County Senior League Div One - Game 8
06/11/21 - Wombwell Town vs Athersley Recreation Development

Wombwell Town got back to winning ways after last week's first defeat of the season with a narrow victory over Athersley Recreation Development.

The first 45 saw some scrappy play and an injury to Jordan Cooper after just eleven minutes meant a slight tactical switch up front for the Wellers.

The first big chance of the game fell to the visitors as a shot from the left side of the penalty area was pushed wide for a corner by Jonathan Davis on 15 minutes.

Matty Thornton, starting his first game since injury, created the first real opportunity for Wombwell Town on the half hour when his effort on goal was parried by the keeper and cleared for a throw.

The breakthrough came three minutes before half time as right back Jake Padgett drove forward and delivered a cross from deep.

Brodie Cooper was unmarked at the far post and volleyed home for his first goal in the Wellers' shirt.

Wombwell Town quickly doubled their lead in the second half as captain Luke Exley netted his second goal of the season as he pounced on the loose ball following a blocked effort by Brad Kerr on the left side of the box on 49 minutes.

A bizarre decision on 58 minutes could have resulted in a third for Wombwell Town, but actually gave Athersley Rec their goal instead.

A high ball forward was dropping towards the keeper and while the ball was some12 feet in the air the referee blew for offside against James Copley. The ball dropped through the keeper's hands and into the net.

The Wellers' players were appealing for the goal to be given as Rec got on with the game and played the ball forward down the left. With Davis unable to smother the ball across goal the player waiting in the box simply had to tap it in, with a foul on Josh Dixon also missed during his attempt to get back and mark the scorer.

With the referee telling players he didn't like to send anyone off, Athersley Rec's number three was only booked after committing a foul as the last man, from behind, as Thornton ran through on goal on 65 minutes.

Thankfully for the home side the game calmed down for the final period of the game and the points were secured.
