County Senior League Div One - Game 9
18/12/21 - Wombwell Town vs New Bohemians
The final game of 2021 saw the Wellers play their first league game since the 8th November and they kept the pressure on other teams around them with a convincing win over New Bohemians.
3-0 somewhat flattered the visitors who struggled on a heavy pitch, and had to play their veteran goalkeeper Nick Wells outfield for parts of the game.
Everyone was shocked on nine minutes as Jordan Cooper missed a golden opportunity to give the home side the lead. His shot was skewed wide of an empty net after Lee Bennett's initial effort was saved by former Wombwell Town trialist Jenson Beever.
A minute later it was Bennett scratching his head with an effort fired over the crossbar from J Cooper's ball from the right.
Bennett came closer still on 22 minutes when his free-kick smacked off the crossbar and out of play from 30 yards.
The remainder of the first half was a more even affair with New Bohemians forcing one save from Matthew Simpson who deflected the ball out for a corner with a low shot.
Debutante Josh Whittaker will be feeling frustrated as he was forced off on 42 minutes after his tackle pulled his calf muscle and it gave Under 21 ever-present Bailey Wilson another chance to shine having made his debut last weekend.
As it has been proven so many times this season Wombwell Town are a second half side and a slight change in formation which saw them go 4-2-4 put extra pressure on the New Bohemians back line.
Four minutes into the half there were huge calls for a penalty when Bennett was pulled down by the ankle on the goal line by Beever, but unfortunately referee Elliot Hunt couldn't see through the crowd of players to make a decision.
It didn't matter too much as Jordan Cooper finally scored his first goal for the club a minute later. A shot from an acute angle was smashed into the roof of the net as the pressure finally paid off.
More pressure came and Cooper doubled the lead on 69 minutes after Gareth McDermott's run down the right saw his cross cleared by Harry Shaw to the feet of Cooper inside the area.
Cooper completed his hat trick on 78 minutes with the best goal of the afternoon as he made no mistake his a powerful shot after Bennett and substitute Joe Wilson worked the ball down the right hand side once more.
Three minutes into added time it was almost another for Cooper chipped over Beever, with the ball hitting the far post and rolling across the line with the keeper able to get back and deny a fourth.
