Pre-season Friendly Number 4
05/08/21 - Wombwell Town vs Worksop Town
For their second game in three days Wombwell Town faced a youthful Worksop Town side and almost snatched victory, but for a late equaliser from the visitors.
The Tigers started with former Weller Seb Malkowski in goal, however his game was ended on 25 minutes due to injury. Whilst not called into action often the Polish shot-stopper did deny Wellers trialist Joe Wilson on a 1-on-1.
In a goal less first half clear chances were at a premium, with Wellers' keeper Jono Davis making a fingertip save to deny the visitors.
Both teams stepped up the tempo in the second half with Wombwell Town's Eddie Agnew trying his luck from distance with an effort that went over the bar.
The deadlock was finally broken thanks to a penalty awarded on 50 minutes as a surging run by right back Josh Dixon was halted by a late tackle in the area. Lee Bennett made no mistake from the spot; netting into the bottom left corner.
The lead only lasted five minutes though as Worksop Town struck back with a header from a right wing cross.
Bennett showed his own qualities in the air just three minutes later as he headed in from Gareth McDermott's corner to score his fifth goal of the week.
Substitute keeper Matty Simpson replaced Davis n 67 minutes and the U21 keeper did well to deny Worksop Town from equalising earlier, before he was finally beaten from a direct free-kick four minutes from time.
There was a Euro '96 Gazza-esc moment as the game headed to additional time when Wilson was inches away from getting on the end of a Luke Exley cross as the striker slid in to try and snatch a winner.
