Worksop Van Hire North Midlands Development League - North Division - Game 10
27/01/22 - Dronfield Town U21 vs Wombwell Town U21

Hard working and a lot of determination have finally seen Jack Butterley's U21 side win their second game of the season.

With the win over Sheffield City being scratched due to the opposition leaving the WVHNMDL the team have been looking for those elusive three points from back in September.

In a game where Dronfield Town may have felt three points would be easy to come by looking at the table, it was Wombwell Town who were on the front foot, or boot, from kick off.

The earliest chance came on two minutes from a corner won by Harrison Cox, who looked dangerous on the wing throughout the evening. Jack Redmond's corner was headed on by Cox to the back post which saw Brad Cresswell shoot wide.

It was from a similar corner that saw the opening goal of the game. Redmond's delivery on 16 minutes was headed towards goal by Tom Smith and the ball eventually found its way into the net via a couple of misfortunate failed on-the-line clearances.

The Wellers nearly doubled their lead just two minutes later when George Williams struck the post following yet another dangerously delivered corner.

At the other end of the pitch Dronfield produced little in the way of efforts and a shot from long range was caught comfortably by Matty Simpson.

In first half added time Connor Housley was credited for the second goal of the game. A long kick up field by Simpson found the defender who cleared the ball off Housley and past the keeper from outside the area. It may have been an own goal, but this was how we saw the goal, and Housley is claiming it regardless. Who can blame him?

On 53 minutes Smith was close to scoring his second of the game as he came up for another corner, however his shot went over the crossbar on this occasion.

Housley also came close, three minutes later, as his shot from just inside the area went wide of the post.

Afterwards it was a game of half chances and solid defending by both sides with Dronfield coming the closest in the final ten minutes when Simpson watched a snap-shot travel across his goal.
