22/09/21 - Wombwell Town U21 vs Sheffield City U21
After two defeats manager Jack Butterley was looking for a response from his side. Hopes were dealt a blow before kick off as centre back George Hodgkiss limped out of the warm-up to be replaced by named sub Bailey Wilson.
Fears were not realised once the game began and it took just 56 seconds for debutante Connor Housley to pounce on a pass from Josh Collins and slot past the keeper to give the U21s the lead.
Sheffield City then had a small spell where they put a little pressure on the defence and had a shot on target, which went straight down the throat of Matty Simpson.
On eleven minutes The Wellers made it 2-0 as a free-kick from Jack Redmond on the right caught the keeper out. His parry into the middle of the box found captain Tom Smith whose controlled volley found the back of the net.
Throughout the game The Wellers hit the post four times with the keeper scrambling one effort from Lewis Easterbrook off the line on 20 minutes followed by a cross from the right smacking the upright four minutes later.
On 26 minutes goal number went in as Housley tapped into the empty net following a parried effort by Harrison Cox fell kindly for his strike partner.
Housley completed his hat-trick on the half hour with a well taken shot from 12 yards that beat the keeper.
Josh Collins made it 5-0 ten minutes later with arguably the best goal of the night as he curled a shot into the corner from long range.
It was almost six two minutes before the break as Housley looked to become provider with a cross from the left. Collins' header struck the post and it remained 5-0 at half time.
Four minutes into the second half an the goals began to flow again as Cox beat the offside trap and slotted home after receiving the ball from debutante Kienhan Powell from the left.
Housley struck the post on the hour after doing all the hard work on the edge of the area. The keeper lost possession of the ball to Housley who stepped to the keepers side and tried to pass the ball into the empty net, only to be thwarted by the base of the post.
On 61 minutes Lewis Hope came onto the pitch for his debut along with keeper Tom Cooper and it started a purple patch of goals for The Wellers.
Hope made an instant impact scoring with his first touch (a header) just seconds after coming on following Powell's left wing cross.
Hope bagged his second in three minutes smashing the ball high into the net from close range after Niall Khamis-Burtoft won the ball on the right and played the perfect ball into the striker.
On 68 minutes things grew worse for Sheffield City as their goalkeeper limped off injured and was replaced by an outfielder.
It gave Lewis Hope the chance to complete his hat trick, which he did on 73 minutes to make the game 9-0 just 12 minutes after entering the field.
A minute later and another substitute and debutante, Drew Russell, volleyed in to take the goal tally into double figures.
Frustration started to creep into the Sheffield City team and on 82 minutes Lewis Easterbrook was fouled in the area and stepped up to score his first goal for the U21s from the penalty spot.
Three minutes later and the visitors were down to ten men as one of their players hobbled off the pitch with cramp.
The Wellers added one more on 88 minutes with Easterbrook running through and scoring from inside the area.
Referee Josh Thompson finally blew the whistle to end Sheffield City's pain.
