Worksop Van Hire North Midlands Development League - North Division - Game 4
15/10/21 - Thorncliffe U21 vs Wombwell Town U21
A disastrous final fifteen minutes saw the Under 21s squander a two goal lead as decisions went against them in the final period of the game.
Some excellent performances in the opening 75 minutes from the young squad will give them a platform to build upon for future matches.
The game itself saw Wombwell Town have a goal chalked off for the finest of offside margins on 25 minutes as Connor Housley put the ball past the keeper.
Blyth Mkonya proved his aerial presence in the box on 34 minutes when he headed the Wellers into the lead at the back post following a free-kick on the left wing by captain Tom Smith.
It was almost 2-0 three minutes into the second half as Lewis Easterbrook found space outside the penalty area to unleash and drive at goal which cannoned back off the crossbar.
Housley did make it 2-0 on 50 minutes. A long ball forward by Smith from the back found the striker who timed his run to perfection and only had the advancing keeper in the box to beat.
The game then flipped on its head on 74 minutes when a long ball forward was called for by Mkonya, but his attempted headed didn't connect and the ball fell to the Thorncliffe striker who got to the ball before Tom Cooper and put the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.
A run into the box on 82 minutes saw the Thorncliffe striker crowded out and with nowhere to go decided to fall to the ground after losing the ball. Bizarrely the referee awarded a penalty, which they duly dispatched.
Then, as the game went into added time the old tricks were out again as the advancing Thorncliffe player ran into Jack Redmond and went down. The free-kick was fired past Cooper which led to FA Cup winning style celebrations and booking for Jack Butterley and Jay Christian in the Wombwell dugout who looked on in disbelief at the match officials.
It was a harsh lesson for the squad who now prepare for a home game against Dronfield Town on Wednesday night.
