Worksop Van Hire North Midlands Development League - North Division - Game 7
17/11/21 - Wombwell Town U21 vs Sheffield Town U21
It was sadly a fifth defeat in a row for the under 21 side as visitors Sheffield Town completed the double over the struggling teenagers.
In fairness, Jack Butterley's side were up against ten players from Sheffield Town's 14 man squad who have first team experience this season and the extra experience, on top a couple of extra years in age, proved to be the difference.
In the first half the Wellers contained the athletic side and it was only a 26th minutes penalty that denied the side going in at the break with a clean sheet.
The penalty was awarded as debutant Niall Scallen was late with a tackle inside the area and the spot kick was slotted to Matty Simpson's left.
A second goal on 56 minutes could have seen the home side collapse, but their determination got them a goal back as Jay Hall, the U21's own regular first team player, scored with a looping shot on 58 minutes, which he has deserved all season.
Pure speed restored Sheffield Town's two goal lead on 73 minutes as sprint race down the left was won by the opposition (not for the first time) and the shot was curled past Simpson.
With heads dropping the visitors added a fourth two minutes later after a free kick was awarded, which also saw Jack Redmond pick up a yellow card.
Four substitutions in the final quarter of an hour stopped the new league leaders (following this result) from increasing their lead further.
Once again there were positives to take from the game, but the result doesn't make happy reading.
