Worksop Van Hire North Midlands Development League - Mini-Shield - Game 2
31/03/22 - Wombwell Town U21 vs Dronfield Town U21

The luck for the U21 side still hasn't changed as they fell to a single goal against Dronfield Town in the second mini-shield group game.

Despite hitting the frame of the goal four times, the home side just couldn't convert their chances on a freezing cold spring evening.

The Wellers saw a lot of possession in the first half, but it was Matty Simpson who was called upon to make the first save on nine minutes with the shot cleared away via the keeper's legs.

Two minutes later and Alfie Milnes made his first save as Brad Cresswell volleyed towards goal.

The only goal of the game came on 27 minutes when a Dronfield corner was cleared for a Wellers counter attack. Milnes blocked the shot and the counter-counter attack saw Simpson unable to stop the shot from the right of the box.

A big opportunity to equalise came three minutes before the break as Harrison Cox played the ball across goal to find Lewis Easterbrook unmarked, however the midfielder hit the ball over the crossbar.

The second half saw stand-in manager Brett Page (with Jack Butterley and Jay Christian both absent) and Doug O'Connor bring on Jack Redmond and the defender did enough to force Dronfield to hit the crossbar on 53 minutes.

Redmond then clipped the post at the other end two minutes later via a free-kick.

On 58 minutes, as the pressure began to build on the Dronfield defence, a Redmond corner was headed over by Cresswell at the near post.

Easterbrook then forced a save from Milnes which was spilt into the path of substitute Calum Smith, but the forward (returning after a few months away from the club) struck the post from five  yards out.

The final ten minutes saw yet more chances go begging for the home side starting with Easterbrook's involvement again, ending in a shot saved on the line by Milnes from Connor Housley's 12 yard effort.

As the game flowed into added time Smith hit the post again from a narrow angle, which saw the ball in the air for Easterbrook to head and hit the crossbar before going over.

On another night it could have been a very different scoreline!
