04/04/22 - Wombwell Town U21 vs Club Thorne U21
A defeat against Club Thorne meant that this was Wombwell Town U21's final home game of the season. There is no way out of the U21 Mini-Shield group with one game left to play at Dronfield Town and the game couldn't have gotten off to a worse start. Just 30 seconds in a handball outside the area gave Club Thorne an early free-kick. A deflection on the shot took the ball past U19 keeper Tommy Walshaw. With heads already dropped the visitors made it 2-0 after just three minutes and it was feared the young Wellers side would crumble from then after. The side weren't to give up just yet and on eleven minutes a ball from the right by Brad Cresswell found Calum Smith who controlled the ball and finished the move with a shot from the edge of the area that flew past Jake Woodward. Morale was lifted even further on 20 minutes when Calum Smith tucked home a rebound from Tom Smith's free-kick from the left. Club Thorne didn't waste time restoring their lead though and three minutes later a ball from the left of the penalty area took a deflection and gave Walshaw no chances of stopping the ball going past him. The second half saw the U21s try to push forward, but were thwarted when the game went 4-2 on 67 minutes. Despite their best efforts, it just wasn't going to be their night a fifth and final goal three minutes into added time rounded off a solid performance by the away side.
