U21 Pre-season Friendly Number 1
04/08/21 - Parkgate Reserves vs Wombwell Town U21
What started out as a baptism of fire for Jack Butterley's Under 21 side turned into a rite of passage as the fledgling team came back to snatch the victory on their first outing.
Against players with more experience, and a side who play men's football during the regular season, it was no surprise the hosts started the stronger.
The Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior Division Two side had played together already during pre-season and it showed in the opening 45 minutes as they created more chances in front of goal.
It took ten minutes for Parkgate Reserves to take the lead and it came from a header at the near post following a corner.
If not for a hard-working defence and goalkeeper Matthew Simpson who grew in confidence as the game went on it would have been more before the second goal eventually went in.
On 35 minutes Parkgate's number nine beat the offside trap and slotted home past Simpson in the last line of defence.
Unfortunately, the first half was ended a few minutes early after a bad ankle injury to Alfie Glover saw the former U19 Weller go to hospital.
In the second half the U21 side found their composure and started to create chances, which forced the former Handsworth keeper in the Parkgate net into action.
There was nothing the keeper could do on 67 minutes though as Ethan Tarmey found himself free inside the area to shoot and pull one back.
Fortune favours the brave and a little luck also helps sometimes. Luck certainly came as a quickfire double put Wombwell Town U21 into the lead.
With 15 minutes to go Josh Tyas found himself free on the right wing and a shot towards goal looked to be the keepers, but for the deflection from one of his defenders which took the ball past him into the net for the equaliser.
A minute or two later and the comeback was complete as a long range effort from Lewis Easterbrook was fumbled by the keeper who saw the ball squirm under his body and into the net in what can only be described a goalkeeping howler.
Despite some late chances by the home side and some big saves by Simpson, Parkgate Reserves couldn't find an equaliser and in the end Butterley's U21 side won their first game.
