U21 Pre-season Friendly Number 3
19/08/21 - Wombwell Town U21 vs Emley AFC U18
The U21s faced a stern test against Emley AFC's U18 team, but were unfortunate not to win the game when the visitors levelled five minutes from time.
Emley finally broke through after testing keepers Matty Simpson (in the first 45) and Tom Cooper (in the second 45) with several chances, which tested the defence all evening.
The first period of the game was played in the rain, making the ball run faster on the slippery surface and it took the Wellers side a while to find any rhythm and create anything in the final third.
On the half hour though former U19 player Calum Smith was able to turn his marker and twist himself into the box where he was free to curl a shot into the top corner with his left foot.
A change in formation in the second half saw a more defensive structure to Jack Butterley's side and once again the bench was used to give the squad some game time and a chance to impress with just two friendlies remaining after this game.
The game seemed to be petering out into a 1-0 win, but for a pot-shot with five minutes remaining, which saw Cooper beaten. It may have taken a slight deflection, but it was enough to deny the U21s an home win.
