U21 Pre-season Friendly Number 5
31/08/21 - Hepworth Utd U23 vs Wombwell Town U21
For their final pre-season season friendly manager Jack Butterley gave his team a real challenge - set in the beautiful rural surroundings of Hepworth.
It was a Hepworth United U23 side, which appeared to include a number of first team players who will feature for them at step 7 this season.
In comparison to the second 45 (well 35, but we'll get to that later) the first half was a quiet affair with the play spread 50/50.
With virtually the first shot of the game however, the U21 team took the lead on a quarter of an hour as Jay Hall tucked his shot into the keeper's bottom right corner after a brilliant run down the right by Calum Smith saw the striker play the perfect ball across goal.
At the other end a few wasteful chances and a good save by Tom Cooper denied Hepworth who were behind at the break.
Grey skies and a touch of misty rain in the second half didn't deter the Wellers' side from putting in arguably their best spell of football to date as four goal flew in to dampen the home side's spirit.
Calum Smith set the tone of the second half with two early chances with one going wide and the other, played through to him by no-relation Tom Smith, was tipped over the crossbar.
C. Smith decided to be the provider again on 57 minutes when a square ball to Keegan Hepplestone who struck a fierce shot into the top corner from the edge of the D.
The man with two assists eventually got his goal after he was fouled in the area from behind on 64 minutes and scored with the resulting penalty.
Just three minutes later and Harrison Cox got to show what he could do with the ball and bagged himself a goal as well. A 20-yard shot which skimmed across the wet grass caught the keeper in a bad position and all he could do was dive in vain.
With the skies growing darker and darker every minute a fifth goal, and a comical one at that, by Wombwell Town made the referee's mind up and he blew for full time just over ten minutes early.
The final goal was one that might appear on a 'Hilarious Football Moments' video on YouTube (unfortunately we weren't filming) as Hall chased the ball down with the advancing keeper out of his area doing the same. The keeper went to clear the ball - missed - and left Hall with nothing more to do bar tap the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Jack Butterley will now have a tough decision to make regarding his team selection for their opening U21 league game on Tuesday 7th September against Worsbrough Bridge U21.
