EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 1
03/09/22 - Dodworth MW vs Wombwell Town
On the 11th August 2018 Wombwell Town played their first ever friendly against Dodworth MW and we soundly beaten 8-0. Just over four years and two league titles later, Wombwell Town returned to start their first season in the County Senior League Premier Division.
Eddie Agnew, who now sleeps with the captain's armband under his pillow, was the only survivor from that opening friendly to appear in this game and he lead by example up front with his determination and non-stop running, and it was Agnew who set up the opening chance when his pass found Will Harling who forced a save from George Bason.
Dodworth looked sluggish in the opening exchanges, but almost took the lead on ten minutes when a bounce was misjudged by Dec Cocking and Jono Davis and the header was cleared off the line by James Copley.
The only goal of the came on 27 minutes as a ball into the box was slightly mis-controlled by keeper Bason, which allowed Jordan Cooper to get his foot on the ball, take it past the keeper and score into the empty net.
Harling came close again on 40 minutes as his long-range drive flew just wide of the target.
Half Time: DMWFC 0, WTFC 1.
The second half saw Dodworth keep the ball a lot more as they tried to get back into the game, but in the early stages of the second half only substitute Bailey Cowsell had a real shooting opportunity where he skied the ball high over the goal.
Agnew came close to doubling the lead on 73 minutes as Wellers' sub Brad Cresswell played a ball through to J. Cooper who saw his shot blocked by Bason and shot wide by his strike partner.
Dodworth knew time was running out and forced a massive save from Davis from a free-kick taken just outside the penalty area on 81 minutes.
Dec Cocking, Alf Thompson, James Copley and Brodie Cooper all provided defence blocks as Wombwell Town were pressed back and had to play long. Another effort, this time by Cresswell, didn't quite drop enough to trouble Bason from distance on 83 minutes.
Two minutes into added time Davis was the hero again as he got down to left to palm the ball away from danger following Simon Rodgers header in the box. The defender now playing up front in desperation from the home side.
The Wellers held their own and every player can say they ran themselves into the ground to pick up the three points on the opening day.
A fairy tale ending, but the season has only just started!
