EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 10
07/01/23 - Wombwell Town vs Sheffield Town
It was a Happy New Year for Wombwell Town as they started 2023 with an near perfect performance.
It had been six weeks since the Wellers last played, and their opponents just happened to be the same team that beat them all those weeks ago.
Sheffield Town had made several changes to their line-up and the home side also welcomed back Jono Davis, Jake Padgett and captain Eddie Agnew back with Josh Whittaker returning from America and new signings Connor Peace and Joe Wilson also in the squad.
It took just four minutes for the opening goal of the year to be scored as Luke Micklethwaite slid in to beat Aaron Stockton at the far post following Gareth McDermott's left wing cross
It was Micklethwaite's first goal for the club and he could have had two just three minutes later when his shot forced Stockton into a save which was parried away well to safety.
Connor Peace, returning after 13 months away from the club, had the impact he was hoping for and scored after eleven minutes. A pacy run down the left following Eddie Agnew's through ball from the half way line gave the striker time to pick his spot and fire over the keeper's shoulder into the roof of the net.
On 23 minutes McDermott almost had a second assist as his corner on the right was headed against the crossbar by Agnew, which was then turned away from another corner.
It was 3-0 on 37 minutes with McDermott involved, sort of, once more. The left back's tackle by the left hand corner flag saw Sheffield Town with a free kick where they were looking to have their first shot at Jono Davis' goal, however the ball was cleared comfortably and in a blink of the eye Peace was at the other end of the pitch to score his second of the afternoon.
Half Time: WTFC 3, STFC 0
Wombwell Town put more pressure on the visitors defence early in the second half and good work from Jordan Cooper on the left of the penalty area gave him space to square the ball into the area for Agnew who took a touch and fired low past the keeper to make it 4-0 on 55 minutes.
A slight lapse of concentration then hit the home side as Sheffield Town put pressure at the other end immediately from the re-start. The initial shot was deflected onto the crossbar by Davis, but the ball bounced down hitting Davis on the head and squirmed away from him for the lively Mosab Gadour to sneak in and tap in a consolation.
After the lengthy lay-off legs grew tired in the final half hour of the game and it became apparent as Agnew shot wide on 69 minutes.
Sheffield Town came close to adding a second on 78 minutes when he was forced to twist in the air to punch clear an effort from the edge of the area, but despite falling awkwardly was able to finish the game - stretching some very tired muscles.
Peace had two chances to complete his hat-trick before being substituted, but the final ten minutes saw neither side bother either keeper and referee Simon Hunter blew on exactly 90 minutes to end the first game of the year.
