EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 11
14/01/23 - Handsworth FC Reserves vs Wombwell Town
Last season Wombwell Town completed the double over their opponents as both battled for the Division One title, but it was a different outcome for their first meeting in the Premier Division of the County Senior League.
The outcome may have been completely different had the offside flag not been raised after Jordan Cooper hit the rebound in from Eddie Agnew's initial fourth minutes which was parried into the striker's feet by keeper Spencer Bingley.
More decisions went in the home side's favour as Handsworth started to put some pressure on the Wellers defence, however the booking for J. Cooper on 23 minutes was a clear one as he went into the tackle with his studs showing.
Ellis Moore's sublime hit from outside the area following a free kick on the right wing gave keeper Jono Davis no chance as the strike saw Handsworth take the lead on 35 minutes.
Wombwell Town tried to find an equaliser before the break with efforts from Will Harling going over the top and a free-kick from Gareth McDermott on the stroke of half time clipped the top of the crossbar.
Half Time: HFCR 1, WTFC 0
It was the visitors who applied the early pressure once again at the start of the second half as J. Cooper floated a ball from right to left to the feet of Agnew who raced past his marker and drilled a low shot, but was denied by the base of the post before the ball went behind for a goal kick.
On 63 minutes, a long kick up-field by Davis by the corner flag was either curled by the wind or a misskick, but it gave Handsworth the opportunity to try and score from the halfway line. Davis was able to get back and tip the ball over the crossbar, but from the resulting corner Theo Wilson was able to double the lead.
Another offside call denied the Wellers, before Connor Peace finally beat the trap and was able to volley the ball home, despite furious shouts from the Handsworth defence, to give the visitors hope heading into the final 20 minutes.
Jordan Cooper's frustrating day was over two minutes into injury time as the striker was replaced with a nasty gash on his leg and his replacement Ryan Smith almost equalised in the dying moments with an effort that failed to trouble Bingley.
