EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 12
28/01/23 - Oughtibridge WM vs Wombwell Town
You can just feel when a day wasn't going to be your day, and for the Wellers this was it. In the first time in their history the side have lost back-to-back games. Not bad after nearly five years of football, but it will be how the team lost at Oughtibridge where the team will learn lessons.
The first half could have seen the Wellers take the lead on several occasions starting from their first effort on three minutes where Jordan Cooper's first shot of the afternoon was deflected wide for a corner.
Four minutes later and Jordan headed onto the top of the net following Eddie Agnew's set up in the box, which was then followed by Luke Micklethwaite forcing a save with a shot across goal on 13 minutes - most of the crowd thought it was going in!
Oughtibridge then recorded their first effort towards Jonathan Davis' goal without really testing the keeper, before the action went back down the other end for Agnew's shot to be pushed to the side by the home goalkeeper on 16 minutes.
Will Harling's free-kick on 26 minutes was headed off the line, but before the rebound could be pounced on referee Ross Steele awarded Oughtibridge a free kick for a push in the box.
With five minutes to go before half time a break from Eddie Agnew saw the captain get past the keeper only to be taken down from behind in the area. Clear penalty. Gareth McDermott, looking for his first goal of the season stepped up, but was denied by the keeper who dove correctly to his right.
Half Time: OWM 0, WTFC 0
The penalty miss seemed to knock the stuffing out of the visitors and a resilient Oughtibridge defence denied giving the Wellers few chances in the second half to find a way through.
The knock out blow came on 75 minutes when the home side broke the deadlock. A ball on the right wing was kept in on the goal line and played around McDermott allowing the winger to put a ball into the box for his team mate to score at the near post.
A touch of frustration then crept into the Wellers performance with a couple of bookings and a rare sin bin with McDermott missing the final minutes of the match, leaving the visitors with ten men.
Much was said in the dressing room after the game and the Wellers will now look forward to a test against NCEL opposition in Nostell MW in the Sheffield Cup on Tuesday.
