EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 13
04/02/23 - Wombwell Town vs Dodworth MW
Following back-to-back defeats in the league and knocked out on penalties in the Sheffield Senior Cup in their last game, Wombwell Town were ready to stop the run of poor form starting with a tough game against Dodworth MW.
The game started with a bang as tempers were frayed following the opening goal. A gloriously curled shot from the right of the penalty area from Connor Peace flew over George Bason and into the far corner.
The Wellers' players celebrated by the main stand, while Dodworth manager Daz Young remonstrated to the referee over a decision in the build up that didn't give his team a throw. The ball, in the air, may have crossed the line by the dugouts, however assistant referee Jake Rhodes didn't signal and the ball was then played across the pitch to Peace on the right. The argument lead to Young picking up a yellow card.
It was all hands, and other body parts, to the pumps as Dodworth worked their way forward on several occasions looking for the equaliser. Sam Scrivens looked the most dangerous and forced Jono Davis into a save on 28 minutes, with the keeper collecting safely from the follow-up cross.
Davis then made another save, collecting the ball between his legs - causing himself a bit of pain in the groin region.
On 37 minutes The Wellers had two chances to double their lead with Jordan Cooper's effort inside the box blocked before Will Harling's rebounded effort was parried away by Bason.
Half Time: WTFC 1, DMW 0.
The second period saw a scrappy affair with Dodworth again pushing for an equaliser. Davis was going to collect his 6th clean sheet of the season and made a double save on 59 minutes.
On 72 minutes Wombwell Town came close once more with Peace setting up substitute Joe Wilson who's initial shot was blocked before falling to captain Eddie Agnew who put the follow-up wide of the post.
Peace had a chance to grab his second just six minutes later with Agnew the provider on the right. Peace's run into the area saw the shot hit low and across goal to go out just by the far post.
Frustrations were getting the better of Dodworth and it could have been worse for them on 85 minutes when Aaron Brotherton kicked out at Alf Thompson who had cleared the ball. Thompson stood up to the Dodworth captain who pushed Thompson and Brodie Cooper to the floor. Brotherton was booked and Cooper later required six stitches.
The game could have been put to bed at the game entered added time when keeper Bason lost the ball to Agnew and grabbed the forward in the area. Even though the captain didn't go to ground it stopped him from shooting and a penalty was awarded.
While Dodworth complained from the upteenth time in the game Sam Severn used his time by destroying the penalty spot area with his boots, which was then followed by an attempt by Bason when Severn was moved away.
The antics worked as Peace couldn't place the ball on the now deformed mound of the earth and hit his spot-kick against the post.
There were no more chances for the visitors, but there was just time left for Dodworth's Connor Rollinson to be put in the sin bin for yet more dissent.
The result gives Wombwell Town a double 1-0 win over Dodworth in their first season in the County Senior League Premier Division, and the team will now look for a win on the road at Houghton Main on Feb 11th.
