EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 16
25/02/23 - Wombwell Town vs Wombwell Main
The first highly anticipated encounter between the two Wombwell clubs at the Recreation Ground proved to be an exciting one from start to finish for the estimated 250 spectators.
It took just 60 seconds before the visitors were awarded their first free-kick and from the kick the ball hit one-man wall Jordan Cooper who protected his face while jumping and got hit by the ball. Referee Justin Carpenter immediately stamped his mark on the game by showing the forward an early yellow card.
There were no arguments on eleven minutes though as a penalty was awarded to Main. Jono Davis' rushing out of goal saw the keeper miss the ball from the dive and take the Main player instead. Following a booking for Davis the league's top goal scorer, Ryan Wingrove, scored from the spot placing the ball high above the keeper who dived in the correct direction.
Joe Campbell doubled the lead on 28 minutes with a stunning shot from about 30 yards. His turn and quick shot beat Davis at full stretch and nestled into the net by the left hand post. A goal worthy of any derby occasion.
It was going to take a moment of magic for the Wellers to get back into the game and debutante Louis Wardle provided it five minutes before the break. A free-kick wide on the left wing was fired directly at Slav Mernenko's goal, catching the keeper unaware as the ball hit the left hand side netting to make it 2-1.
Deep into added time a foul on Eddie Agnew on the edge of the area that was heard at the far end by the clubhouse resulted in a booking for the Main man and another free-kick for Wardle. Instead of going for goal the new set-piece specialist floated the ball to Agnew at the far post who headed back across the box and watched his effort curl in at the far post to level the scores on the stroke of half time.
Half Time: WTFC 2, WMFC 2
Wombwell Town had all the early pressure to try and take the lead for the first time in the game at the second half but were denied by a determined Main defence.
Brodie Cooper had the best chance of the second half a few minutes in as he collected the ball on the edge of the area and volleyed towards goal only to be denied by the outstretched foot of Marnenko who steered the ball wide.
on 52 minutes Will Harling was able to make some space outside the area, but his final shot failed to trouble the keeper.
There were large appeals for a penalty for the home side on 65 minutes after Jordan Cooper was bundled down in the area while chasing the ball towards the corner flag, but it was waved away referee Carpenter.
With the game petering out to a draw frustrations almost boiled over in added time when Wardle fouled Gadhafi Kiwanuka who grabbed the midfielder around the neck after going to ground, but referee Carpenter calmed the situation down well and got play back underway for the final few minutes.
