EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 18
18/03/23 - Wombwell Town vs Houghton Main
Simply put, this was a must win game for the Wellers as they looked to put a run of poor form behind them and remount their top five hopes that could secure them promotion to the NCEL.
After a fairly slow start to the game the first opportunity of the game fell to the head of Alf Thompson, but the Wellers centre back was denied on the line and put behind for the opening corner of the match on five minutes.
A burst of speed down the left on 12 minutes saw the opening goal of the game. Connor Peace beat his man and crossed low looking to Luke Micklethwaite in the penalty area. Houghton captain Paul Jacobs slid in to try and win the ball, but after making contact with it the ball skimmed the studs of Micklethwaite's boot and crossed the line before the keeper could reach it.
The best chance for the visitors came on 26 minutes when former Weller Calum Smith, who put in a strong shift down the left side of the Houghton attacking line, carved out a chance but shot high and wide.
The heavens had opened up, but nothing was going to stop Peace who doubled the lead on the half hour mark. The marksman was played through the middle and was left in acres of space to pick his spot and beat the onrushing Jay Brearley.
Half Time: Wellers 2, HMFC 0.
Whatever was said by Casey Marshall and Carl Pilkington in the visitors changing room at half time obviously worked as their team put early pressure on the Wellers back lime early in the second half.
Their pressure built and resulted in a corner on 47 minutes as Jono Davis was called into action at the right hand post to deny a low shot from a narrow angle.
Davis was able to watch another effort go wide a minute later, but on 54 minutes Houghton pulled a goal back in fortuitous fashion. Smith was involved again and will claim the goal as a mix-up at the back saw an unfortunate deflection into the net. We've been sworn to secrecy on what actually happened (lol).
Eight minutes later the two goal lead was restored as stand-in captain Gareth McDermott danced around the Houghton Main players to find himself on the left of the penalty box and prancing towards the near post. His delightful footwork spun the defenders around to make them dizzy and the left back played the ball across the box for Micklethwaite to hit home his second of the game.
A free-kick just outside the area on 68 minutes produced a fourth and final goal for the home side as specialist Louis Wardle placed the ball through the massive gap in the wall and watched as the keeper could only redirect the effort into the roof of the net. Wardle's second free kick goal in three matches in the red and black kit.
With ten minutes to go it was almost a case of deja vu as McDermott tried to repeat his earlier efforts in the box and after turning three more defenders inside-out he went for goal himself only to be denied by Brierley at the post.
A much needed win and performance for the Wellers who will move onto the next game with renewed confidence.
