EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 2
17/09/22 - Wombwell Town vs Ecclesfield Red Rose
Beautiful, but breezy weather welcomed Wombwell Town for their first league home game of the 2022/23 with Ecclesfield Red Rose their opponents.
It was a slow start to the game, but once the shots started the game escalated quickly. The first real chance of the game came on 14 minutes as Eddie Agnew shot wide from inside the area.
The captain made no mistake six minutes later when he made it onto the end of a perfect cross ball from Luke Micklethwaite on the right of the penalty area. The opening goal then saw four more fly in before half time.
Agnew scored his second on 23 minutes as he found himself free in the area with time and space to set himself up and place the ball past Jenson Beever.
Gareth McDermott's second corner in quick succession gave the Wellers their third goal on 32 minutes as his ball into the penalty area was flicked on by Agnew and struck sweetly by Brodie Cooper on the far edge of the box and watched as the shot dipped over everyone and into the back of the net.
Three minutes before half time Will Harling thought he would have a piece of the action and headed in on the rebound right in front of the keeper.
To finish off the half in style a McDermott free kick into the box found Agnew once again who headed in to complete his second hat-trick for the club.
Half Time: WTFC 5, ERR 0
The second half saw Wombwell Town ease off the pressure, but on 53 minutes Jordan Cooper was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet after his strike was saved by the fingertips of Beever who redirected the shot onto the post and out for a corner.
A minute before the hour Harling scored his second of the game after creating space for himself in the box before unleashing a shot into the bottom left corner.
Ecclesfield Red Rose struggled in front of goal all afternoon, but with half an hour to go an error in defence allowed the visitors to score a simple tap-in.
With ten minutes remaining substitute Cian Everard had the ball in the back of the net, but the 17 year-old's first goal for the club was ruled out for a handball in the build-up.
