EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 21
08/04/23 - Wombwell Town vs South Kirkby Colliery
It is funny how some matches mirror each other. In the Wellers previous outing they were leading at half time away from home and lost after a second half comeback by the home side. The same happened for the game against South Kirkby Colliery.
The first half didn't see much action for either keeper, but captain Eddie Agnew tried to get something starting just before the quarter hour mark when he shot just the bar.
With neither keeper tested it was surprising when the opening goal of the game came on 38 minutes. From our biased eyes it looked as though Jordan Cooper had been fouled in front of the main stand at the half way line, only for play to continue. South Kirkby switched the play to the right and Robbie Tolley was able to turn Owen Wildblood on the edge of the box before firing past Alf Thompson and Jono Davis.
Half Time: Wellers 0, SKC 1.
A tactical switch at half time saw Gareth McDermott replace Connor Peace and the change seem to work instantly at the start of the second half.
It took just three minutes for the Wellers to find an equaliser and it came from a second successive corner from Louis Wardle. The frist corner was cleared behind at the near post much to the visitors relief, but they were caught out by the deeper corner as Brodie Cooper connected at the far post to head the ball over the defence and into the net.
A penalty was awarded on the hour as Gareth McDermott's strike from outside the box hit the arm of Danny Miller who twisted his body, but kept his right arm outstretched to block the ball. Unfortunately for Jordan Cooper, his penalty was hit over the crossbar to keep the score level.
The home side continued to put pressure on the South Kirkby Colliery defence and it finally paid off on 71 minutes.
A free kick down the right saw McDermott cross to Wardle who miss-hit his initial shot. Luckily it fell to Luke Micklethwaite who played the ball back to Wardle who made no mistake a second time and put the ball into the bottom left hand corner to give the Wellers the lead for the first time in the game.
It was almost 3-1 just two minutes later as Micklethwaite's creativity down the right saw his cross headed towards goal by Alf Thompson, only to be denied by keeper Josh Heppinstall on the line.
The visitors then had a good spell of pressure which saw them head wide at the near post from a corner on 74 minutes.
Desperate for a goal the referee was forced to wave away two penalty claims in quick succession on 76 minutes as South Kirkby tried anything to get back in the game, eventually a free-kick was awarded to the Wellers and the visitors given a stern warning.
This didn't stop the attack from the visitors though as Davis was forced to make a big save on 78 minutes to put the ball over the crossbar after the visitors broke down the left wing.
With nine minutes to go the game could have been sealed as Micklethwaite was involved again down the right. His cross was palmed away by Heppinstall to the feet of Will Harling, who couldn't get a shot away with two men on the line. Instead the midfielder played the ball back across goal to Micklethwaite who leant back and fired over the bar for the last real action of the game.
