EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 22
12/04/23 - North Gawber Colliery vs Wombwell Town
With a number of players missing the midweek early kick-off due to work or injury it was a slightly different looking Wellers that took to the field at North Gawber on Wednesday evening.
The major changes came in midfield and attack with no Brodie Cooper (missing his first game of the season), Sam Maddock, Owen Wildblood, Luke Micklethwaite, Connor Peace and captain Eddie Agnew.
It saw the return of Shay Bould to the squad after recent troubles with an ankle injury and a debut for the experienced Luke Hinsley, who was dual signed at the start of the season, but has been playing for Pontefract Collieries recently.
North Gawber were the dominant side for much of the first half with Jono Davis kept busy with several comfortable saves, but a tactical switch swapped Gareth McDermott, Will Harling and Luke Haslam into different positions and seemed to pay off for the final third of the first half.
Bould and Jordan Cooper combined on the half hour to give the visitors just their second shot of the game as the ball eventually found Harling just outside the area, but the midfielder could only shoot wide of the target.
The pressure was stepped up with just three minutes to go as a Louis Wardle free-kick was put in the box for Cooper to strike at goal. Unfortunately for Cooper, goalkeeper Sam Muxlow was able to react from close-range and push the ball over the crossbar.
Just as half time approached Harling was involved again when he played in Hinsley down the left side of the penalty area and the debut man squared the ball for Bould to slide in and make contact. Bould's shot however, was also blocked by Muxlow and the ball was cleared as the referee blew for half time seconds later.
Half Time: NGC 0, Wellers 0.
WIth the light likely to fade as the game drew to a conclusion a five minute half time was enough to freshen the teams and get the game going again. However, there was lengthy delay on the hour as Owen Moule suffered what looked like a nasty injury to his knee. Almost ten minutes later it was safe to carry the player from the pitch. We wish Owen a speedy recovery.
As the game headed into the final 15 minutes of the 90 the Wellers thought they had scored as Alf Thompson headed a McDermott corner towards goal. Shouts that the ball had crossed the line were ignored as the ball was cleared.
In typical football fashion, the next attack by North Gawber saw the home side take the lead. Just 90 seconds after the goal-line clearance a throw from the left found Carey Welford at the near post. Welford, using his strength, was allowed to turn and fire into the bottom corner.
Knowing that a defeat could end their top five hopes the Wellers pushed players forward and on 83 minutes a ball from Cooper fell nicely to McDermott in the box, but the volley wide denied him his first goal of the season.
The referee indicated nine minutes of added time would be played and in the final seconds every Wombwell Town player was up for a late McDermott corner. The initial effort was cleared, but keeper Davis crossed from the right and found centre-back Thompson, who took one touch and fired past Muxlow to equalise in the knick of time!
