EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 23
15/04/23 - Wombwell Town vs Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves
A number of familiar faces returned to the line-up. Luke Micklethwaite, Brodie Cooper and Connor Peace returned having missed the mid-week late drama at North Gawber, while Brad Kerr returned after spending much of the season at Hallam FC. There was also a return for Luke Norbury who hadn't appeared for the club since May 2022.
The first half was one of very few chances at either end of the pitch. The earliest action came on 14 minutes when a Stocksbridge head deflected a cross into the box over his own keeper, but luckily for the visitors it cannoned off the crossbar and was cleared to safety.
Four minutes later as Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves looked to play the offside trap to stop the pace up-front of the home side, they were caught out as Kerr left the ball for B. Cooper to run onto from an onside position. The midfielder found Peace just inside the area, but the shot was collected by the Stocksbridge keeper.
The final action of the half came at the other end of the pitch as a cross from the left was saved on the line by Jono Davis low down and cleared.
Half Time: Wellers 0, SPSR 0.
A fairly even game of football suddenly burst into life on 57 minutes as Kerr's strike inside the area was deflected away from the keeper and struck the base of the post.
Three minutes later and a rare moment of madness on the touchline saw Wellers' Manager Karl Rose shown the red card after he approached the Stocksbridge bench and shoved one of the management team over. There was no excuses and Rose trudged off to watch the game from a distance.
The red card didn't break the momentum on the pitch and on 63 minutes Peace had broken the offside play once again and tried placing the ball under the keeper. The ball hit the keeper and deflected back to Peace who could find the defender covering on the line from close range.
Peace finally got the goal he deserved on 67 minutes as he latched onto Will Harling's 60 yard ball and found himself all alone as he travelled to the edge of the area and put the ball past the advancing keeper.
Wanting a goal on his return, Kerr was almost joining his strike partner on the scoresheet just three minutes as his effort a narrow angle inside the box flew across goal and wide.
With less than a quarter of the hour remaining another red card was shown by referee Megan Wilson, who had no choice as Stocksbridge's number four took out Harling with a high lunge long after the ball was played upfield.
Norbury returned to the pitch for the final ten minutes and held the ball up well in the final third, utilising his strength and helping his team secure their first clean sheet for eight games.
