EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 6
29/10/22 - Wombwell Town vs Oughtibridge WMSC
Wombwell Town's first home game in six weeks started brightly as they had continued attacks in the opening 45 minutes.
The action started to heat up on seven minutes when Jordan Cooper's opening shot on goal forced a save from Oughtibridge keeper Jack Mitchell.
Five minutes later and a string of passes between the team finally saw Will Harling shoot over the crossbar.
Mitchell was forced into action again on 19 minutes when Eddie Agnew set up Harling who headed straight towards the keeper.
There was a slight lull before the breakthrough came on 31 minutes. A run down the left flank by Agnew saw keeper Mitchell leave his goal, only for the Wellers' Captain to square the ball for J. Cooper to slide in and put the ball into the empty net.
The ball was in the back of the visitors net again on 38 minutes as James Copley used his height to head in at the back post from Harling's corner.
As Copley started to celebrate referee Duncan Ward blew for a free-kick instead with Copley seemingly leaning on his defender a little too much.
Four minutes later Agnew had a glorious chance to double the lead as he found himself clear on the left of the penalty area with Mitchell advancing once again. Agnew's shot travelled across goal, but agonisingly wide of the target.
Half Time: WTFC 1, OWM 0
The second half started slowly, but there was controversy on the hour when Oughtibridge equalised in a fairly unsporting manner.
Goalkeeper Jono Davis was down injured as the visitors went on the attack. The keeper was able to jump somehow to make one save, but the pass back across goal was put in by Matt Harrison.
There was then a nine minute delay and some serious concern for Davis who received treatment before eventually being able to leave the pitch and replaced in goal by regular left back Gareth McDermott.
Despite being a goalkeeper down it was Wombwell Town who had the best chance to find a winner in the final 30 plus 13 minutes of added time.
on 75 minutes Harling's corner had to be tipped straight over the crossbar by Mitchell and the frame of the goal denied Luke Micklethwaite two minutes later from the midfielder's shot from the edge of the area.
A Harling free-kick on 82 minutes was headed against the crossbar by Jordan Cooper and quick reflexes by Joe Egan weren't enough to keep the follow-up shot down as the ball flew hight over the crossbar.
Screams from the Oughtibridge bench to get a shot on McDermott's goal became an ongoing struggle on the pitch as the Wellers' defence stood strong. The closest McDermott came to making a save was clearing a loose ball by his left post in a rare scramble for possession in the penalty area.
While it was relief to hear the final whistle after a difficult second half, it also feels like two points dropped for the home side.
