EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 8
12/11/22 - South Kirkby Colliery vs Wombwell Town
South Kirkby Colliery were the only side to beat The Wellers last season as both gained promotion from Division One, however their first encounter in the County Senior League Premier Division had a more favourable outcome for ourselves.
In a game that felt lethargic on a soft pitch where the grass couldn't be cut due to the weather, both sides struggled to really get out of first gear throughout.
The opening effort towards goal came after nine minutes when captain Eddie Agnew turned in the box to set up the onrushing Will Harling who shot across goal and wide.
There were big shouts from the crowd as the marauding Gareth McDermott went down in the penalty area on the 17 minutes. Referee Justin Carpenter waved away the crowds appeals and McDermott didn't complain.
The only goal of the game came on 28 minutes as the visitors kept up the pressure on the South Kirkby defence. A three on one rush saw Agnew first cross from the right to Jordan Cooper on the left edge of the penalty area. The striker, deciding not to shoot straight at keeper Josh Heppinstall played a square ball to the penalty spot for Harling who took a touch and left footed the ball into the net.
Half Time: SKC 0, WTFC 1
Jono Davis was the first of the keepers to be called into action during the second half as he was forced into three awkward back-to-back-to-back saves on 57 minutes. The first strike was parried straight back to the striker with the rebound punched into the sky and then off the line for the third shot put behind for a corner.
On 81 minutes Jake Padgett returned for his first appearance since breaking his wrist in August and gained some minutes at left back to give McDermott a rest.
Three minutes into added time a slight kick out by Luke Micklethwaite saw Kirkby sub Harry Dargue lose his cool and take the legs of the midfielder out from under him. Referee Carpenter had no choice but to send off Dargue, and after talking with his linesman correctly booked Micklethwaite as well.
