EV2 County Senior League Premier Division - Game 9
26/11/22 - Sheffield Town vs Wombwell Town
The Wellers were forced into making several changes before kick off. Goalkeeper Jono Davis was replaced by 18 year old debutante Aaron Davison. Alf Thompson returned after illness for the missing Will Harling and Ryan Smith started his first game since his return, stepping in for captain Eddie Agnew.
Karl Rose's side were dealt another blow just six minutes into the game when Luke Micklethwaite had to be carried off the field after two minutes of treatment with fears the midfielder had broken his ankle - thankfully not, but he was out for the rest of the game.
Sheffield Town could sense the disruption and used their pace to get down their left wing with Abdulrahman Alghamdi turning Dec Cocking inside out before curling a shot over Davison into the far corner on 12 minutes.
Then followed a handful of minutes that changed the outlook of the game completely. A decision was made following an incident in the Sheffield Town penalty area that, if it happened again, would see the team walk from the field. However, on this occasion the game continued and a raised foot putting studs down the side of Gareth McDermott's foot on 21 minutes only caused more unrest and unease amongst the visiting players.
A minute later it was 2-0 as Abiodun Olukotun latched onto a pass from Cocking to McDermott and raced clear to slot under the onrushing Davison.
On 36 minutes Joe Egan pulled a goal back for the visitors, stabbing the ball home on the third attempt after Aaron Stockton first saved, a second effort was blocked by a hand of a defender and the final effort went in off the hand of a second Sheffield Town player as they tried to stop the ball going in.
Half Time: ST 2, WTFC 1
The Wellers came out in the second half knowing they were going to be battling for anything and in the slightly calmer atmosphere they were able to equalise just after the hour.
A cross from the left hand side just missed Calum Smith (returning to the club for a second time and making his first appearance since September 2021) but found the head of Luke Haslam at the far post who put it in off the crossbar.
Sheffield Town then came close twice in two minutes when Davison was forced to push the ball over the crossbar from a freekick and Alf Thompson cleared on the line from the resulting corner on 66 minutes.
Substitute Smith was replaced on 77 minutes for Joe Griggs to take his place on the right of a front three, but more on Griggs later.
The home side found the back of the net again with six minutes to go when Jibrael Alsubari ran across his marker, saw a gap and fired his shot from 30 yards into the bottom corner with Davison left standing and hoping it went wide.
There was plenty of added time and on 98 minutes Ryan Smith found himself through on goal only to be brought down in the area by Malick Mendu, who should have been off for an offence in the first half, and was shown a straight red card. The referee, however gave a free-kick on the edge of the area. From the free-kick Smith was pushed in the back after chasing down the rebound, but neither referee or linesmen wanted to give a penalty so late in the game it seemed.
As the full time whistle blew one last tackle flew in on McDermott and a lot of pushing and shoving saw Griggs shown a post-game red card after the linesmen discussed what he had seen with the referee.
It was a good game of football ruined by the behaviour of various opposition players with discussions to be held as to how to proceed further.
