League Cup Round One
20/08/22 - Wombwell Town vs Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves
The Wellers were forced into three changes from the midweek win at North Gawber, and with options limited on the bench it looked like it would be a tough day against Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves.
The opening 45 minutes though produced just a couple of entertaining moments, with returning keeper Jonathan Davis tipping over on eleven minutes from a long range drive.
17 year-old debutante Cian Everard showed what he was about three minutes later when he created a chance for himself, but shot just wide.
There was disbelief around the ground on 21 minutes when captain Eddie Agnew found himself setting up for a shot inside the penalty area before being taken down by Will Middleton from behind. Penalty appeals were incredibly waved away.
Half Time: WTFC 0, SPSR 0..
Stocksbridge PSR came out lively at the start of the second half and put an effort over the bar from their attack straight from kick off, but that was the closest they came to registering anything on target in the second half.
The only goal of the game came on 53 minutes from a free kick at the half way line. Davis floated the free kick across goal to Gareth McDermott on the right on the penalty area and the experienced man played a low ball for Agnew to hit on the volley and put past Tom Kirkland.
An incident on 75 minutes saw Martell Daswell jump, knee raised and head into the body of Jake Padgett who had risen higher to head the ball and the Wellers' defender fall badly.
After a lengthy delay Padgett was eventually stretchered away and the game continued for the final third of the half.
Trying to make the point that he was in charge, referee Colin Unwin found more than six minutes of added time to prolong the game far more than it needed to be, but Wombwell Town stayed strong and collected the clean sheet, victory and passage into Round Two.
