EV2 County Senior League - League Cup Quarter-Final
26/04/23 - South Kirkby Colliery vs Wombwell Town
Both sides were coming into the Quarter Final off the back of impressive weekend wins with the hopes of making it into the final four.
The visitors started the brighter and a mazy run by captain Eddie Agnew provided the first opportunity with keeper Josh Heppinstall denying the striker from the edge of the penalty area.
Louis Wardle then came close with a free-kick from outside the area as the South Kirkby keeper watched the ball sail just over the crossbar.
The opening goal of the came on 19 minutes as Will Harling's ball down the left found Connor Peace take on his man and square the ball into the penalty area. There was an element of luck as the Kirkby defender slipped on his clearance and Brad Kerr was on hand to collect the ball and smash his effort into the top corner.
Agnew doubled the lead on 31 minutes with a powerful header at the near post from Wardle's corner and the score stayed that way until the second half.
Half Time: SKC 0, WTFC 2.
It wasn't a case of sit back and rest for the Wellers at the start of the second half as Luke Hinsley played Kerr into the penalty area and the striker angled his shot around a defender and Heppinstall into the far corner.
South Kirkby Colliery took their frustrations on the scoreline and turned it into something positive. On 68 minutes a run down the right wing beat Harling and as Jono Davis couldn't reach the ball in time it was a tap-in for Charlie Clegg to give the home side a goal.
Brad Kerr completed his second hat-trick in two games on 83 minutes as the striker collected a long ball forward and struck into the far corner from the right of the box.
The final action of the game saw Wardle dance past an almost static South Kirkby defence into the box before being brought down to give the Wellers an added time penalty. Up stepped keeper Davis to confirm his team's place in the semi-final and his effort hit the bottom left corner with his counterpart not diving in either direction.
