Pre-Season Friendly - Game 1
06/07/24 - Wombwell Town vs Worksop Town
Returning players, new signings and selected hopefuls were all on show in the Wellers first pre-season friendly ahead of the 24/25 campaign. A youthful Worksop Town team were certainly looking to impress and just 75 seconds into the game a loose back pass found the nippiest of wingers free to score past the trialist keeper. Not the start he was looking for! After finding their rhythm it was like last season all over against as Jason Paling's right wing cross found the head of last season's joint top scorer Eddie Agnew who equalised on 25 minutes. The Wellers defence had struggled to click in the first half and the visitors regained the lead on 39 minutes as their Jack Grealish look-a-like beat the offside appeals and finished after going 1-on-1 with the keeper. Two minutes later it was 3-1 after an initial shot from the right was parried by the keeper to 'Grealish' at the far post who tucked in the rebound. WTFC 1, WTFC 3. Changes saw more players get minutes under their belts, but a crop of trialists for Wombwell impressed throughout the second half. It was one of those trialists, who came with a history of scoring goals, who made it a one goal game just four minutes in as he converted a penalty after Kane Reece was fouled in the box. Shortly after, there was a welcomed return to the pitch for James 'Giraffe' Copley who was a regular for the team until the end of November 2022 before injury hit. Copley was only able to manage 60 minutes in one game last season for the first team, and it was great to see him back. It looked as though he hadn't been away with his first touch saw him win the ball in a brilliant tackle. The game was levelled on 77 minutes as Gareth McDermott, refusing to retire, showed the young 'uns how to do it with an incredible finish. Travelling down the right McDermott found space and time to pick his spot and curl a ball over and around the mesmerised Tigers into the far netting. With the Wellers pressing and forcing the visiting keeper into multiple saves it was inevitable the winner was going to come. Another trialist who looked bright throughout the second half, worked his way into the box and his cross found 16-year-old winger James Smith who volleyed past the keeper to make it 4-3.
