Pre-Season Friendly - Game 2
11/07/24 - Wombwell Town vs Stocksbridge Park Steels
The second pre-season friendly of 2024 saw the Wellers pitted against a Stocksbridge Park Steels side two divisions higher, with a few of their reserve players and trialists thrown in to give them a different XI in each half. There was a sense of deja vu early on as it took the visitors just four minutes to take the lead with Dan Hernandez finishing past our returning trialist keeper. Park Steels had the better of the opportunities in the first half and were gifted the opportunity of a second on 21 minutes as Gareth McDermott's late tackle in the area saw a penalty awarded. Jack Haslam, who had signed that day after a successful season with Parkgate last term (including one of the two goals at the Recreation Ground when Parkgate secured the league title just a few months previous) stepped up and fired over the keeper's body who dived correctly. Kane Reece felt he too should have had a penalty at the other end when he appeared to be bundled down, but referee Karl Parker waved away the appeal. WTFC 0, SPSFC 2. With the Stocksbridge XI changed for the second half and more consistent Wellers side were given the opportunity to gel and despite there being no goals it was a more even contest. Stocksbridge's own trialist keeper made two important stops to deflect the ball over the crossbar, but there was no way through for the Wellers. Wombwell Town - 0 Stocksbridge PS - 2 D. Hernandez - 4 J. Haslam - 21 Attendance: 64 paying + u16s not counted
