NCEL- Game 1
27/07/24 - Brigg Town vs Wombwell Town
The start of a new season saw five Wellers make their full debut against a Brigg Town team tipped to do well. With a 15 minute delay to kick off due to several Wellers players stuck in traffic the preparation for the game wasn't as smooth as it could have been, but once the match was underway it was a similar story for the watching visiting supporters. Both teams took the opening stages of the game to suss each other out, but it was Eddie Agnew's header on 24 minutes that gave either side a chance on goal. One of the debut players, Josh Nodder, floated in a free-kick from the right hand side to find Agnew, but the effort was saved well by Brigg keeper Lewis Hill. The breakthrough came on 27 minutes as a move down the right saw Jason Paling pinging a ball into the box. Agnew was there again to take a touch, flicked the ball past Hill and finish into the empty net from 8 yards for the Wellers first goal of the season. Just eight minutes later Agnew was denied a second as his flicked header from a Nodder corner at the near post was reactionally saved by Hill on the line. BTFC 0, WTFC 1. There was another slight delay before the second half got under way, with a Brigg supporter falling behind one of the goals. Thankfully they remained conscious and were well looked after by the staff at Brigg. We wish the supporter a quick recovery. As the home side tried to find a way through the stubborn Wellers defence lead by Rikki Paylor, it was another debutante, Jack Wilson, who had an effort blocked just four minutes before the second goal of the game came. Gavin Allott, back from injury, had 35 minutes on the pitch against Brigg and used all of his experience to get his 17th goal for the club in just 12 appearances on 79 minutes. Hard work from Nodder down the right resulted in a low cross to the feet of Allott who needed just one touch to give him time to turn and slot the ball into the left corner while fending off his marker. Debut keeper Charlie Preston had a few efforts fired towards him that didn't cause much bother, but a penalty six minutes into added time gave the shot stopper the chance to prove himself. Last season Preston had impressed with penalty saves from Jordan Kershaw in two separate matches, and on this occasion he denied the Brigg taker with a mid-air save to his right. After a quick celebration Preston was up and denied the rebound, which then drew the final whistle of the game. Brigg Town - 0 Wombwell Town - 2 Eddie Agnew - 27 Gavin Allott - 79 Attendance: 264.
