NCEL- Game 10
24/09/24 - Wombwell Town vs Maltby Main
Much has been said about the long throw possessed by Owen Sykes this season, however never before has it caused so much trouble that it resulted in four goals. The opening stages of the game saw the ball go from one end to the other without any shots bothering either keeper until the 23rd minute when a left wing cross from Jordan Kershaw saw Josh Nodder's header find the arms of keeper Levi Owen. Throw-in goal number one came on 31 minutes as Sykes' delivery wasn't dealt with and captain Rikki Paylor stabbed home the ball for his first of the season, and tenth goal for the club. A familiar face in Callum Walton had the only first half shot on target for the visitors after 36 minutes as the former Wellers' winger fired a free-kick straight into the chest of Charlie Preston. As the game went into added time a glorious through ball by midfielder Danny Patterson found the feet of Gav Allott 30 yards away from goal, and his break from the defender found him one-on-one with Owen. Allott, with all his experience, knew where to place the ball and doubled the lead with a well taken shot. WTFC 2, MMFC 0. Maltby may have had hopes to getting back into the game, but created very little, despite a couple of crosses missing their target early on. Allott almost grabbed a second on 55 minutes as Kershaw collected the ball down the left and travelled into the penalty area to lay off a pass to Connor Hodgson whose initial effort was blocked and found Allott who, back to goal, back heeled the ball just wide of the post. The third goal came just before the hour mark via Sykes as the throw into the box fell to Kershaw, who turned and fired the ball into the keeper's bottom right corner. Heads dropping, another throw from Sykes just four minutes later did more damage. From the right side of the pitch the ball was fired towards goal by Allott, but a block on the line wasn't called in time before Paylor made sure the ball had crossed the line. A fifth goal on 69 minutes completed the quartet of assists for Sykes as substitute Eddie Agnew found time to shoot towards goal. A deflection made sure it beat the keeper, but the initial shot was on target. There was almost a sixth with ten minutes remaining as a Sykes corner was fired towards goal and parried by Owen onto the crossbar and away. Maltby finally found a consolation goal as a long, diagonal ball found substitute Wade Ripley whose shot across goal from the edge of the area beat Preston to find the far left corner. Wombwell Town - 5 Rikki Paylor 31, 63 Gavin Allott 45+1 Jordan Kershaw - 59 Eddie Agnew 69 Maltby Main - 1 Wade Ripley 82 Attendance: 187.
