NCEL- Game 11
27/09/24 - Nostell MW vs Wombwell Town With four goals from his previous three substitute appearances, Eddie Agnew had earned his start for the trip to Nostell and once against showed why he has been at the club since the beginning. After a lot of pressure in the opening stages Agnew found the way through the Nostell defence on 13 minutes when a free-kick was only half cleared to Jack Dando. The defender's header back towards goal found Gavin Allott and the experienced forward linked up with Agnew. The initial shot was blocked but the rebound caught keeper Harold Edjangue flat footed and the ball skidded past him and into the far corner. The advantage was double just nine minutes later as a string of passes fell to Owen Sykes on the left. His delivery into Agnew saw him link up with Allott once more for a one-two and Agnew fired low, close to the right hand post, to beat Edjangue once more. Nostell's first attempt at goal on 29 minutes was their most dangerous of the match. A long range drive hopped up on the surface, forcing Wellers' keeper Charlie Preston to use his chest and deflect the ball behind for a corner. Agnew could have completed his hat-trick on 34 minutes, but in a surprising moment he missed an empty net from 12 yards. Allott had done the hard part once more, stealing the ball from the keeper's feet and pulling the shot stopper out of position before passing back to the free-man Agnew. Jordan Kershaw didn't want to be left out and on 37 minutes almost had a goal of his own as his mazy run through the middle of the pitch finally saw the marksman fire from just outside the penalty area, only to be denied by the keeper who pushed it away for a corner. NMW 0, WTFC 2. Rikki Paylor had replaced Connor Hodgson in the first half through injury, and the defender made it 3-0 just after the hour mark. Another free-kick was half cleared and picked up, this time, by Danny Youel on the left wing. Youel's ball into the box found Paylor who took a touch and fired into the roof of the net. Nostell MW didn't give up though and kept some forward momentum going, with Gracjan Klimczak clipping the left hand post on 68 minutes from a curling shot on the edge of the area. Determined to move level on all-time club goals, Agnew completed with hat-trick with five minutes remaining as he headed through a crowd to find the net from a Josh Nodder corner. Agnew, now on 57 goals, is tied with Brad Kerr. The end of the game was not how Wombwell Town wanted to end the game. There had only been one booking (for Nostell's Dominic Oldfield) until the 87th minute when Charlie Austerfield was booked for an arm in the face of Kershaw. A minute later Agnew was booked as he slid in to win the ball against the keeper. That seemed harsh as the keeper didn't have control of the ball at any stage. What occurred though in added time was nothing short of crazy. A corner into the box saw a mad scramble of players losing their cool - with Nostell very much the instigators. However, after discussions with his assistant. Paylor was called over an shown a red card. Totally perplexed, the assistant was asked why Paylor was sent off to which his reply was: "I didn't see what happened, but I saw a number six and guessed." Unbelievable! Somewhere in the melee Austerfield was also shown a second yellow, as was Jack Wilson. For some reason the referee wanted to make the end of the game about himself. Nostell MW - 0 Wombwell Town - 4 Eddie Agnew - 13, 22, 85 Rikki Paylor - 62 Attendance: 211
