NCEL- Game 12
05/10/24 - Shelley vs Wombwell Town
This game is dedicated to supporter Bob Forster, who sadly passed away on the eve of the match. Bob had been attending matches since the club began in 2018 and volunteered some of his time to improve the clubhouse. Bob always had a smile on his face and was happy to talk to anyone about anything at matches. He will be missed. The game at Shelley started off slowly, and aside from two half chances for the home side neither keeper was really tested in the opening third of the game. A spark was lit on 32 minutes however, as Jordan Kershaw forced the first save of the game with Paul Day denying the striker one-on-one. Five minutes later and a good passing move in the area found Danny Youel nudge the ball past the oncoming defender and taken down in a late challenge that saw a penalty awarded. No surprises came as Gavin Allott stepped up and powered the spot kick past Day, who correctly dived the right way. The decision seemed to anger the management on the Shelley bench and inexplicably when Youel went to collect the ball in front of them on 41 minutes the manager, Andy Farrell, used both hands to push Youel to the ground while he was bending over. This ignited the Wellers players and bench to defend their team mate and a moment of chaos saw both team pushing and shoving in the home technical area and side of the pitch. Once the dust had settled it was red cards for Farrell and player Stephen Williams and Wellers' coach Louis Axcell and centre back Jack Dando. SFC 0, WTFC 1. With the dust settled at the break, football did the talking in the second half and it took just 30 seconds for the visitors to double their lead. Allott rolled off the shoulder of his defender to stay onside as he dragged the ball across the box and beat Day for a second time from 12 yards. Shelley brief foray's into the Wombwell penalty area resulted in shouts for penalties, rather than trying to shoot, and on 70 minutes the referee had finally had enough and booked someone for simulation. The game was put out of Shelley's reach on 74 minutes as an Owen Sykes throw on the left was flicked on by the hardworking Kershaw to the unmarked Josh Nodder in the middle of the penalty area. The wide-man volleyed past day for just his third goal of the season. Substitute Rhys Plater almost made it four with eight minutes remaining, but Day was equal to the long range drive this time. With injuries depleting the squad, 18-year-old Nathan Vamplew was called up from the Reserves and his cameo at the end of the game saw a composed debut create that fourth goal. Vamplew found himself on the edge of the penalty area to the keeper's right and his ball into the box saw an initial shot blocked by Nodder, mis-controlled by Joe Egan (returning to the side for the first time since the opening day) beautifully to the path of Jack Wilson who fired into the roof of the net for his first goal for the club. Shelley - 0 Wombwell Town - 4 Gavin Allott - 38(p), 46 Josh Nodder - 74 Jack Wilson - 90 Attendance: 85
