NCEL- Game 13
10/10/24 - Wombwell Town vs South Leeds
A first defeat in the league had to come at some point, and it was South Leeds who inflicted that pain in a game they fully deserved to win. South Leeds attacked from kick off and it paid off as they took the lead after just three minutes. A corner wasn't dealt with and imposing forward Scott Jones redirected the ball towards goal. Charlie Preston got down low to push the ball off the line, but assistant referee Paul Cooper indicated to the referee that it had fully crossed the line. The Wellers almost equalised from a set piece of their own on nine minutes as Josh Nodder's free-kick was pushed away from goal by Paul Diamond. Another set piece led to the visitors doubling their lead on 19 minutes. After the free-kick was blocked and half cleared by Jack Dando a low, driven effort across goal deceived everyone and James Law was on the scoresheet. Four minutes later another blow for the Wellers saw them three goals down. Law's effort from outside the box curled dangerously in the area and despite Preston's punch, he could only redirect the ball to the underside of the crossbar and watched in dismay as the ball dropped into the net. Sparks of a comeback came on 26 minutes as a corner in the South Leeds area wasn't dealt with and assistant referee Peter Binks gave the goal, saying the keeper palmed the ball over the line in the scramble. Injuries seem to be hitting the Wellers hard recently, and before half time they lost Gareth McDermott through injury - with Charlie Rogerson taking his place. WTFC 1, SLFC 3. Another change at half time saw Eddie Agnew replace Gavin Allott and a four pronged attack saw efforts go wide of the target or heroically defended as Wombwell pressed forward. A horror challenge on 57 minutes saw Rogerson take a high foot to the face and after a quick chat with his assistants the only option for referee Dan Khan was to show a straight red to Luca Grant. After receiving treatment for three minutes on the pitch, Rogerson was forced to leave the game and was taken to hospital with a suspected broken nose (update: Charlie's x-rays showed a fractured nose and cheek bone). With an extra man for the final 30+ minutes the pressure was all on the visiting defence, and it could have been a one goal game on 65 minutes as Danny Youel put in a rebound after Diamond parried Rhys Plater's effort, only for the flag to be raised against Plater. More chances came with Plater firing into the side netting not once, but twice and the winger was brought down in the box on 79 minutes after his initial shot was blocked, but nothing was going the Wellers' way. Agnew and Jack Dando both had volleyed efforts go wide and over the crossbar in the final five minutes and a final chance from Nathan Vamplew's deep cross saw Nodder strike wide before time was finally up. A rare off day for the Wellers at home with South Leeds equaling the biggest away win at the Recreation Ground since Wombwell Town started in 2018. Wombwell Town - 1 Paul Diamond OG 26 South Leeds - 3 Scott Jones 3 James Law 19, 23 Attendance: 134.
